When I was young we had a side table built by my grandfather in our hall. It was beautifully made, with curved corners and fitted drawers. It still looked great, and, importantly, was functioning perfectly after more than 20 years. It was made with real care using traditional joinery techniques taught to my Pa by his Dad. I’m not sure where that side table is now but I am sure it’s looking great in someone else’s home.

Following my joinery apprenticeship I spent 20 years working in Melbourne and overseas gathering a variety of experience and honing my skills. After all this time I’m still greatly inspired by quality of construction and design.

Ceres Life Auld Design

When I started Auld Design, I aimed to focus on quality above all else. Using traditional joinery techniques and quality sustainably sourced materials ensure that an Auld Design piece can be kept forever, handed down or sold on.

Ten years after the launch of Auld Design we have come a long way from our humble beginnings in a home workshop. We are now in a large workshop and showroom with a few staff, all of whom are trained and shared the values that Auld Design is built on: handmade, hand finished furniture and joinery, locally made with care using beautiful Australian timber.

Being a small, specialised team gives us the ability to work closely with clients and designers and bring their vision to life. We love the unique styles, tones and unusual spaces that require creative and careful design. The collaborative design approach gives our customers a sense of ownership and emotional attachment even before the piece is delivered or installed into their home.

I want Auld Design to be the place that anyone can come to for the dining table that will host Christmas dinners and glasses of wine with friends, or the beautiful fitted bookcase that houses a lifetime of photos and books and treasured memories.
